Kiholo Bay is one of the most scenic options if you’re looking for something secluded and natural.

This location requires a special permit at least 45 days before your elopement date and you can’t use a drone unless you have a special permit. The beach is accessible, though guests with wheelchairs may need assistance navigating through the sand.

Kiholo Bay is really beautiful during sunrise or sunset and features a stony coastline that’s very peaceful and looks untouched.

There is free parking available, though there are no bathrooms or showers onsite.

Pauoa Bay

For couples who need convenience but don’t want to sacrifice beauty, Pauoa Bay is a great option.

What makes this location so unique is the combination of white sand on one side and back and white sand on the other. This variety gives couples a range of backgrounds without ever changing locations.

The permit process is a one-day approval, accessibility is excellent, and nearby hotel facilities provide clean restrooms, parking, and showers.

You can’t use a drone at Pauoa Bay, but because of its easy access and its timing flexibility, Pauoa Bay is a great option for couples inviting family members of all ages.

Punalu’u Black Sand Beach

When most people picture a classic Hawaii Big Island black sand beach, Punalu’u Beach is typically the vision that comes to mind.

Its striking black shoreline creates a dramatic background for intimate ceremonies and elopements, but keep in mind you won’t be able to use a drone here.

Sunrise is usually the best time to have ceremonies here. The location offers free parking, a same-day permit, public restrooms and showers, making it really convenient for out-of-town couples.

Because Punalu’u is located farther from Kona, travel planning should be considered when choosing this location. If you have guests with wheelchairs, it may be difficult to push them through the sand, but otherwise, the accessibility here is good for older guests.

Kehena Black Sand Beach

For adventurous couples who want something less traditional, Kehena Black Sand Beach is a very dramatic and secluded location.

This black beach features a steep staircase leading down to the beach, making it less suitable for older guests or those with mobility concerns.

Sunrise generally provides the most favorable conditions for ceremonies and portraits here.

There is free limited parking, but no bathrooms or showers, which is something to keep in mind if you have younger guests.

Unlike several of the other black sand beaches we’ve mentioned, drone photography is permitted at Kehena Beach.

Honoli’i Beach

Located on the east side of the island, Honoli’i is another same-day permit, stunning black sand beach.

Like Kehena, this location has steep stairs and uneven terrain, making it better suited for couples who want a more adventurous experience. Unlike Kehena though, drone photography is only permitted with a special permit.

The sunrise lighting here creates a beautiful opportunity for couples who want something unique.
