Honokohau Beach, tucked just beyond Honokohau Harbor on the Kona coast, is one of those places that feels calm and peaceful. With its white sand, lava rock shoreline, and Hawaiian green sea turtles, this beach carries both natural beauty and deep history. As part of Kaloko Honokohau National Historical Park, it’s a place where time slows down and moments feel unhurried. That peaceful rhythm makes it an incredibly meaningful setting for Kona family photos.
This session captured a very special milestone for our client’s son, Hudson, as he celebrated his 4th birthday during a family vacation on the Big Island. His family came together with intention, joy, and a level of connection that was immediately felt. Hudson’s mama, who shares their journey through their Instagram account @OurHuddyBuddy, has built a community rooted in love and advocacy. That same warmth showed up fully during our time together. From the very beginning, this session felt less like a photo shoot and more like a family simply being present with one another.
As Big Island family photographers, we truly love working with families and children of all ages. Every session is guided with patience, flexibility, and a sense of play. We use gentle prompts, movement, and tried and true tricks to help kids feel comfortable and have fun. Instead of forcing stiff poses, we focus on real interaction. This lets kids be themselves while we capture genuine moments between parents, siblings, and little ones. We bring babysitter and camp counselor energy to every session, and it shapes every experience we create.
Honokohau Beach is especially well-suited for morning sessions, particularly for families with young children. The early hours are quieter and cooler, with soft light and fewer people along the shoreline. This creates a relaxed environment where kids can explore at their own pace. Mornings also bring calm conditions that make it easier to move between coral sand and lava rock areas. Families have space to settle in, play, and enjoy the experience without feeling rushed.

Honokohau Beach is located just north of Kailua-Kona, within Kaloko Honokohau National Historical Park, and is accessed through the Honokohau Harbor area. Most visitors begin by parking near the harbor and following the marked trail that leads toward the shoreline. While Honokohau Beach feels tucked away once you arrive, the path to get there is straightforward and well-traveled.
From the parking area, you’ll walk along a paved and dirt path that gently winds through lava rock and coastal landscape before opening up to the beach. The walk is relatively flat, though parts of the trail can feel uneven underfoot. Strollers are typically manageable along the path, but wheelchairs are not recommended due to the uneven lava rock. Comfortable footwear is helpful, particularly for families with young children.

This gallery highlights a morning family session at Honokohau Beach on the Kona coast, where soft light, calm conditions, and open space created the perfect environment for kids to explore and families to settle in. Rather than focusing on posed perfection, these images reflect real moments, laughter, and the joy of celebrating a meaningful milestone together during a family vacation in Hawaii.

As the morning unfolded, Honokohau provided the perfect backdrop for the way this family moves through life, with patience, playfulness, and deep care for one another. Hudson’s older siblings stepped in naturally, using silly faces, gentle encouragement, and shared laughter to keep their little brother engaged. We followed their lead, letting the kids set the pace and allowing genuine moments to unfold organically. Every image captures the love and playfulness of this family and serves as a reminder of why documenting family legacy through portraits is so meaningful, reflecting not just how this family looks together, but how it feels to be part of their story.

Honokohau Beach sits within Kaloko Honokohau National Historical Park, an area that was once home to a thriving Hawaiian community. The land surrounding the beach includes ancient fishponds, walking paths, and cultural structures that supported families for generations. This coastline wasn’t just a place to visit; it was a place to live, gather, and sustain daily life. It’s a reminder that this shoreline has witnessed countless family stories long before ours. When photographing here, we’re mindful of the land and approach each session with care and respect, honoring the space while creating meaningful memories for families visiting today.

Honokohau Beach is well known for frequent visits from Hawaiian green sea turtles, especially during the morning hours when they often rest along the shoreline. Seeing turtles in their natural habitat is always special, but it’s important to observe them responsibly.
We always maintain a respectful distance and never interfere with a turtle’s natural behavior. During family sessions, we guide everyone gently, keeping interactions calm and quiet while allowing kids to observe from afar. Respecting wildlife is part of the experience here, and it helps protect both the turtles and the integrity of this special place.
Honokohau’s mix of coral sand, lava rock, and coastal greenery pairs beautifully with soft, neutral tones. Light creams, whites, soft blues, muted greens, and warm earth tones photograph especially well in this setting. Bare feet are comfortable here and often help keep the look relaxed and natural.
We recommend coordinating colors rather than matching exactly, focusing on breathable fabrics and simple textures. Avoid bold patterns or heavy logos, as they can distract from the natural beauty of the location and the moments unfolding between your family. Comfort always comes first, especially for kids, so outfits that allow movement and play are ideal.
Yes, Honokohau Beach can be a wonderful location for young kids, especially during morning sessions. The beach tends to be quieter earlier in the day, with cooler temperatures and fewer visitors, which creates a calmer environment for little ones.
There’s plenty of open space to explore, and we always move at a pace that feels comfortable for each child. We build in time for breaks, movement, and play, allowing kids to be themselves rather than expecting them to sit still or pose perfectly. This approach helps create genuine moments that feel natural and stress-free for the whole family.
There’s something especially peaceful about Honokohau in the morning. The light is soft, the air feels cooler, and the beach is often quiet and unhurried. These conditions make it easier for families to settle in, relax, and enjoy the experience together without feeling rushed.
Morning sessions here allow kids to explore while energy levels are still high and distractions are minimal. Combined with the natural beauty and meaningful history of the area, Honokohau Beach offers a setting that feels both serene and grounded, making it one of our favorite locations for Kona family photos.
