Palm trees, lava rock shoreline, tide pools, and sweeping ocean views come together at Old Kona Airport Beach. This creates one of the most visually dynamic and meaningful photography locations in Kailua Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii.
As Big Island photographers who regularly guide clients to scenic coastal settings, we’ve found that Old Kona Airport Beach offers a rare balance of natural beauty, accessibility, and atmosphere. Also known as Old Airport Beach and officially named Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area, this oceanfront park is a favorite for many photography sessions. These include surprise proposals, engagement photos, couples portraits, maternity sessions, elopements, family photography, and solo portraits.
Ancient lava rock shapes much of the Kona coastline, making it difficult to find beaches that feel open and visually varied. Here, the landscape unfolds naturally with wide shoreline views, palm-lined grassy areas, and striking volcanic textures within a short walking distance. What was once Kona’s original airport has evolved into a beloved gathering place. Locals and visitors come here to celebrate milestones, connect with one another, and experience the beauty of Hawaii’s west coast at a slower, more intentional pace.
One of the most compelling aspects of Old Airport Beach Kona is how naturally a session can unfold. The coastline stretches wide, allowing room for movement and spontaneity while we adapt to light, weather, and your vision for the experience.
Within Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area, the landscape offers a beautiful range of textures and tones. Lava rock formations create contrast and depth. Palm trees bring a timeless island feel. Open grassy spaces soften the environment and offer comfortable gathering areas. Tide pools and shoreline paths introduce natural motion and storytelling opportunities.

Wide scenic views of Old Kona Airport Beach, including lava rock shoreline, palm trees, grassy park areas, tide pools, ocean horizon, and golden sunset light.
Lighting here shifts gently throughout the day. Morning sessions often feel calm and peaceful with soft, even tones. Late afternoon brings dimension and ocean breezes that add movement to the natural surroundings. Sunset introduces warm golden light that transforms the coastline into a soft and romantic setting.
Even as a popular public beach, Old Kona Airport Beach provides enough space to find quiet pockets where sessions feel intimate and grounded.
We intentionally guide photography sessions at Old Airport Beach while still allowing space for natural connection and movement.
As Big Island photographers known for creating vibrant, true-to-color imagery inspired by Hawaii’s landscapes, we approach each session with flexibility. We stay aware of how light, environment, and emotion naturally work together. From the moment we begin, our goal is to help you feel comfortable and present. This allows your images to reflect genuine experiences rather than stiff or overly posed moments.
You can expect an experience that feels relaxed and unhurried. Ocean views and coastal sounds create a grounded atmosphere. We gently guide each session, so you always feel confident in front of the camera. They often include movement along the shoreline, quiet moments near lava rock formations, playful interactions in open grassy areas, and warm golden light as the sun begins to set.
Take a look at how different types of photography sessions come to life at Old Kona Airport Beach.

Whether walking hand in hand during an engagement session or planning a discreet oceanfront proposal, Old Kona Airport Beach feels both expansive and intimate. It also provides an ideal setting for maternity portraits framed by palm trees, sunset elopements, and meaningful family moments.
One of the reasons Old Kona Airport Beach feels so welcoming is its location within a vibrant, community-centered area loved by local residents. The park is surrounded by open spaces where people gather, play, and spend time outdoors. This creates a relaxed and authentic atmosphere that naturally carries into photography sessions.
Just steps from the shoreline, you’ll find expansive grassy fields often used for baseball, football, and soccer. There is also an in-line hockey rink and a skate park popular with older kids and teens. A peaceful garden area offers quiet walking paths. Nearby tennis courts, a playground, and a public swimming pool add even more recreational options.

Because of this, Old Airport Beach Kona often feels like a true hub of everyday life in Kailua Kona. On weekends and holidays, locals host birthday celebrations, family gatherings, and casual barbecues near the ocean. This sense of connection and community gives the location a warm, lived-in feel that many visitors find both grounding and memorable.
Long before it became the oceanfront park visitors enjoy today, Old Kona Airport played an important role in West Hawaii’s early aviation history. From the 1940s through the early 1970s, this site served as Kona’s primary airport, connecting the Big Island with Oahu and neighboring islands. Aircraft once landed on a single runway stretching alongside the coastline, with passengers arriving just steps from the ocean.

As air travel evolved and larger aircraft required longer runways, Kona International Airport was developed farther north. It opened in 1970. Old Kona Airport was then retired from commercial use. Rather than being lost to development, the former runway and surrounding land were preserved. They were eventually transformed into what is now Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area.
Today, traces of this history remain visible in the park’s wide, open layout and expansive parking area. This space was once part of the original runway. What was once a place of arrivals and departures is now where locals and visitors gather. They come to create new memories along the same scenic shoreline.
Old Kona Airport Beach, also known as Old Airport Beach or Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area, is located just north of downtown Kailua Kona and is easily accessible for both visitors and residents.
From Queen Kaahumanu Highway, turn toward Old Airport Road and follow clearly marked signs to the recreation area. Parking is available in the large open lot near the shoreline, followed by a short walk to the beach, grassy park spaces, and coastal paths often used during photography sessions.

The park is generally open daily from early morning until sunset. Because hours may occasionally change due to maintenance, events, or seasonal updates, it’s always a good idea to confirm current park hours before your visit.
For photography sessions, morning often provides calm ocean conditions and soft, even lighting.
Afternoon sessions can be beautiful when cloud cover softens the sunlight. Sunset is especially popular for its warm tones and peaceful atmosphere. We help you choose the best time based on lighting, weather patterns, crowd levels, and your session vision. This helps the experience feel smooth and well planned.
