How to Get to Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach
Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach is located along the southern coast of the Big Island, just off Highway 11 between Naalehu and Pahala. The beach is easy to reach by car, and unlike many of the island’s more remote beaches, you won’t need four-wheel drive or a hike to get there.
From Kailua-Kona, plan for approximately 1.5 hours of driving. If you’re visiting from the Kohala Coast and resort areas around Waikoloa and Mauna Lani, the drive is closer to 2 hours. From Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Punaluʻu is approximately 35 to 40 minutes away, making the two destinations easy to combine into a day exploring the southern side of the island.
Once you turn off Highway 11, the road leads directly toward the coastline and the Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach parking area. Parking is available near the beach, and from there it’s just a short walk to the black sand, coconut palms, and shoreline.
If you’re planning a portrait session or elopement at Punaluʻu, keep the longer drive in mind when building your itinerary. We recommend giving yourself plenty of extra travel time so you can enjoy the journey without feeling rushed, especially if you’re driving down from Kona or the Kohala Coast.

Best Time of Day to Elope at Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach
