Getting to Hapuna Beach and Parking
Hapuna Beach is one of the easiest beaches on the Big Island to access. Guests staying at the Westin Hapuna Beach Resort can enjoy direct beach access from the resort, while day visitors can enter through Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area. The park features a large parking lot just a short walk from the sand. Hawaii residents with a valid state ID receive free parking, while non-residents are required to pay a parking and park entrance fee.
Visitors will find restrooms, outdoor showers, picnic tables, and lifeguards, making Hapuna Beach a convenient destination for families and anyone planning to spend the day. A paved walkway from the parking area also makes it easy to bring strollers, beach wagons, and other beach gear.
If you’re planning a sunset photo session, we recommend arriving a little early to allow time for parking and the short walk to our meeting location. The parking lot can fill up on weekends, holidays, and during peak travel seasons.

The beach is large enough that we can move throughout the session, giving your gallery a diverse collection of images while keeping the experience relaxed and enjoyable.
From wide scenic portraits and candid family moments near the water to romantic walks along the shoreline and colorful sunset silhouettes, every part of the beach offers something a little different. Depending on the ocean conditions, we can also incorporate gentle waves, reflections in the wet sand, and the natural colors of the coastline.

Best Time of Day for Photos at Hapuna Beach
Hapuna Beach is beautiful at any time of day, but the lighting and overall experience vary depending on when you visit. Because the beach offers very little natural shade, we recommend scheduling your photo session around sunrise or sunset whenever possible. These times provide softer light, cooler temperatures, and the most comfortable conditions.
- Sunrise is a great choice for families with young children, couples, and anyone looking for a quieter beach. The shoreline is typically less crowded, the ocean is often calmer, and the soft morning light creates beautiful, natural colors.
- Afternoon sessions are generally not recommended, especially on sunny days. With very little shade available, the overhead sun creates harsher light, stronger shadows, and warmer conditions that can be uncomfortable, particularly for young children and older family members. If an afternoon session is necessary, an overcast day provides much softer light and a more enjoyable experience.
- Sunset is our favorite time to photograph at Hapuna Beach. The warm evening light, colorful skies, and reflections along the shoreline create timeless images, making it an ideal time for couples, maternity sessions, elopements, and family portraits.
