If you’re planning engagement photography in Hawaii, your timing can make a big difference in the overall experience. While Hawaii’s weather is pretty ideal throughout the year, May through October is typically considered the sunniest and driest season across much of the state, making it a popular time for engagement sessions.
If you’ve been dreaming of golden sunsets, calm turquoise water, and warm tropical weather, May through October is often the best time for a Hawaii engagement session.
As Big Island photographers, we’ve spent years helping couples plan engagement photography in Hawaii. One thing we’ve learned is that the right season doesn’t just affect your photos, but also how much flexibility you have.

One of the biggest reasons why couples love this time of year is simple: the weather is usually more predictable.
When you’re traveling to Hawaii for a destination engagement session, you won’t want to spend time watching the forecast. During Hawaii’s drier season, sunny days will become more common and rain is generally less frequent, which means planning tends to be a little easier.
The ocean is also calmer during many of these months, particularly along the Kona Coast. Beaches are more accessible, the water appears clearer, and couples have more options when choosing locations for their session.
Of course though, one of the biggest highlights of the day is the sunset.
Golden hour during this time of year can be absolutely incredible. Warm tones reflect off the water, the horizon is clearer, and the entire island glows as the sun drops toward the ocean. It’s the picture-perfect scenery that many couples dream of when they start looking for Hawaii engagement photographers.

Although May through October is often grouped together as Hawaii’s dry season, each part of the season has its own personality.
May and June are wonderful months for engagement photos because the island is still carrying much of the lush greenery that develops during the wetter months. Landscapes look vibrant, temperatures are warm, and summer weather is beginning to settle in.
For couples who love a balance of tropical greenery and sunshine, this can be an especially beautiful time for engagement photography in Hawaii.
When most people think of Hawaii, they often imagine conditions similar to July and August.
These months are known for warm temperatures, bright sunshine, and great ocean conditions. Beaches are colorful, the water often looks incredibly blue, and sunset sessions can be breathtaking.
For couples imagining a classic beach-focused Hawaii engagement, mid-summer can check every box.
September and October are some of the best months for Hawaii engagement sessions.
The weather is usually warm and sunny, the ocean is still comfortable, and many couples find that certain areas are a little less busy than they are during peak summer travel.
The sunsets are still breathtaking and evenings are mild and comfortable. For many couples, the mix of great weather and less tourists is the perfect combination.

One of the things we love most as Hawaii engagement photographers is the incredible variety of scenery available within a relatively short distance.
A single session can include soft sandy beaches, rugged lava rock coastlines, swaying palms, and dramatic ocean views.
During the drier months, many of these locations become even easier to enjoy.
Beach sessions benefit from calmer conditions and glowing evening light. Lava fields are often more comfortable to explore when trails are dry. Cliffside locations offer grand views and colorful skies, while adventure-focused sessions have more flexibility when the weather is so nice.
For couples who want their engagement photography in Hawaii to become an experience while also being a photoshoot, the dry season creates more opportunities for exploration.

Absolutely.
Hawaii is still a tropical destination, and occasional rain showers can happen at any time of year.
The good news is that many showers move through quickly, especially on the Kona side of the Big Island. It’s not unusual to see a brief passing shower followed by sunshine shortly afterward.
This is also where working with experienced Hawaii engagement photographers becomes invaluable. Different parts of the island can have completely different weather patterns on the same day. Understanding local microclimates helps us guide couples toward locations that are most likely to offer favorable conditions.

The Kona Coast is one of the most ideal places for engagement photography in Hawaii for several reasons.
It’s known as one of the drier areas of Hawaii, which often means more reliable weather and consistent sunsets. The variety of nearby landscapes is also hard to beat.
Within a relatively short drive, couples can experience sandy beaches, lava fields, palm-lined coastlines, and dramatic ocean overlooks. That variety allows us to create Hawaii photo galleries that are diverse while still keeping the experience relaxed and enjoyable.
If you’re hoping to schedule your engagement photography during Hawaii’s busiest travel season, it’s always a good idea to begin planning early. Summer and fall are popular times for visitors, and availability can become limited.
When choosing a session time, we almost always recommend planning around sunset whenever possible. The light is softer, temperatures are more comfortable, and the atmosphere naturally feels more romantic.
What you wear to your Hawaii engagement photos can also make a difference. We typically find that soft neutrals, earthy tones, creams, and flowy fabrics complement Hawaii’s landscapes beautifully. These colors photograph well against the ocean, beaches, and lava rock without competing with the scenery itself.
