Nestled along the Kohala Coast on the Big Island of Hawaii, Kaunaʻoa Beach, more commonly known as Mauna Kea Beach, is one of the island’s most breathtaking stretches of white sand. Getting to Mauna Kea Beach and Parking
One of the things we love most about Mauna Kea Beach is how accessible it is, whether you’re staying at the resort or simply visiting for the day. Guests of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, Autograph Collection, can walk directly from their accommodations to the beach in just a few minutes, making it one of the most convenient white-sand beaches on the Big Island.
If you’re not staying at the resort, you can still visit because Kaunaʻoa (Mauna Kea) Beach is open to the public. Public access is available through the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel entrance, where a limited number of complimentary beach parking passes are distributed each morning on a first-come, first-served basis. Once the public parking lot reaches capacity, additional vehicles are typically turned away until spaces become available, unless visitors are willing to pay for valet parking at the hotel.
From the parking lot, it’s only a short walk along a paved path to the beach. Unlike some of the Big Island’s more rugged coastal locations, Mauna Kea Beach is easy to access for families with young children, couples, and guests with limited mobility. The smooth walkway, easy access, and wide sandy beach make it one of the most accessible photography locations on the Kohala Coast.
Because parking is limited, we recommend arriving early in the morning, especially during weekends, holidays, and the busy winter travel season. If you’re planning a sunrise or sunset photography session with us, we’ll help coordinate the best arrival time to ensure a smooth and stress-free experience.

Best Time of Day for Photos at Mauna Kea Beach
Mauna Kea Beach is beautiful throughout the day, but the lighting changes depending on when you visit. Because the beach is wide open with very little natural shade, we almost always recommend scheduling your session at sunrise or sunset for the most flattering light and the best overall experience.
- Sunrise is one of our favorite times to photograph at Mauna Kea Beach. The beach is typically quiet and uncrowded, allowing us to enjoy the scenery without distractions and create images that feel peaceful, natural, and relaxed. The soft morning light creates light and airy photos, and the calm ocean and clear views of Maui make sunrise especially beautiful for families, couples, and maternity sessions.
- We don’t typically recommend midday sessions at Mauna Kea Beach. Because the beach offers very little natural shade, the overhead sun creates harsh light and strong shadows that are less flattering for portraits. If midday is your only option, we’ll gladly recommend another location on the Big Island that offers better lighting and more comfortable conditions.
- Sunset is the most popular time to photograph at Mauna Kea Beach. The sun creates golden light that’s perfect for portraits, while the white sand and turquoise water look especially vibrant. On clear evenings, you’ll also have beautiful views of Maui across the ocean. Although the beach tends to be busier around sunset, it’s large enough that we can usually find quieter areas for your session.
Sunset sessions are also a wonderful option for families and couples who want to turn their photoshoot into a full evening experience. After your session, we recommend having dinner at Manta Restaurant at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. It’s one of our favorite oceanfront restaurants on the Big Island, and after sunset you may even have the chance to watch manta rays feeding along the shoreline.
