Directions And Parking for Mauna Lani Beach
Mauna Lani Beach is about a 35-minute drive north of Kona International Airport (KOA). If you’re staying at Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection, the beach is just a short walk from the resort. Visitors staying elsewhere can also access the area by parking at the public beach access near the Mauna Lani Beach Club.
If you’re planning a photo session, we recommend arriving 15–20 minutes early so you have plenty of time to park/valet and meet your photographer.

Extend Your Session with a Walk to a Hidden Beach Near Pauoa Bay
If you’re booking one of our 90-minute or longer sessions, one of our favorite options is taking a short walk from Mauna Lani Beach to a hidden beach near Pauoa Bay. This beautiful stretch of coastline offers a completely different feel, giving your gallery even more variety without needing to drive to another location.
As we make our way along the shoreline, we’ll photograph you in a variety of settings before arriving at one of our favorite hidden gems on the Kohala Coast. Unlike many beaches on the Big Island, this secluded spot features a beautiful blend of white coral sand and black volcanic sand, creating a stunning “salt and pepper” shoreline that’s unlike anywhere else. The contrast between the sand, turquoise water, and surrounding lava rock makes it an incredible backdrop for portraits.
It’s also one of the most reliable places on the Big Island to spot Hawaiian green sea turtles resting on the beach or swimming just offshore. We always admire these incredible animals from a respectful distance, but seeing them in their natural habitat often becomes one of the most memorable moments of the evening.

Permits for Photography at Mauna Lani Beach
Professional photography sessions at Mauna Lani require commercial insurance and advance permits. A commercial use permit must be obtained through the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR).
As experienced photographers, we handle this entire process for you, ensuring all permits, approvals, and logistics are taken care of so your session feels seamless, stress-free, and fully compliant.
Portrait Sessions: Professional portrait sessions require a $20 commercial permit through the DLNR after creating a permit account. Applicants must hold a valid Hawaii General Excise Tax (GET) license and provide proof of liability insurance. Portrait sessions are also limited to a maximum capacity of 30 people.
