My team and I can't wait to work with you. Book a session with us to capture your most beautiful Hawaii memories.
When couples start searching for the best Big Island proposal beaches, one of the most common requests we hear is, “We want somewhere private and secluded.” Most couples want the moment to feel natural, meaningful, and focused entirely on the two of them, without a busy beach taking away from the experience.

The right location should give you beautiful scenery, a little breathing room, and enough flexibility for the proposal to unfold naturally.
On the Big Island, that might mean a quiet cove framed by lava rock, a secluded stretch of coastline that takes a short walk to reach, or even a peaceful section of beach near your hotel or resort that feels a little more tucked away.
Another important part of planning a surprise proposal is figuring out how to get your partner to the beach dressed for photos without making them suspicious. We specifically choose proposal locations with a restaurant within walking distance, which makes the cover story easy. Make a dinner reservation nearby, arrive a little early, and suggest taking a casual sunset stroll along the beach before you “sit down for dinner.” Your partner has a natural reason to dress up, you have a believable excuse to be at the beach around sunset, and we’ll be waiting in position when you arrive.
Timing matters just as much as the location itself. Crowds can change depending on the season, sunset time, and day of the week, so we take all of those details into consideration when helping couples plan the best time and place for their proposal.
We also look for beaches that make it easy to coordinate everything discreetly, with a natural way for us to arrive first, choose a quiet proposal spot, and stay out of sight until the moment happens.
As Big Island proposal photographers, our goal is to help you find a location that feels intimate and special while still giving you the beautiful Hawaii scenery you pictured for the moment.
The Big Island has an incredible variety of beaches, and each one creates a completely different atmosphere for a proposal. Some feel dramatic and rugged, with black lava rock, crashing waves, and sweeping coastline, while others feel softer and more romantic, with white sand, palm trees, and calm water.
For a private proposal, we usually look for locations with several quieter areas rather than one wide-open stretch of beach. That gives us more flexibility if another couple or family happens to be nearby, while also creating more variety for your Hawaii engagement portraits after the proposal.
Here are a few of our favorite Big Island beaches and resort locations with nearby restaurants, making them perfect for couples who want a proposal that feels intimate, scenic, and a little more peaceful.
Four Seasons Resort Hualalai sits on a half-mile stretch of coastline in Kaʻūpūlehu along the North Kona coast. The sprawling resort was designed around the natural landscape, with low-rise bungalows, lush tropical grounds, sandy shoreline, and dramatic black lava formations running throughout the property. For proposals, we especially love the contrast between the dark volcanic coastline and softer resort landscaping, which gives us several completely different looks without having to travel to another location. It feels removed from the busier areas of Kona while still being relatively easy to reach, making it a beautiful option for couples looking for a polished luxury setting surrounded by distinctly Big Island scenery. Four Seasons describes the resort as approximately a 30-minute drive from Kailua-Kona.

From Kailua-Kona: approximately 25–30 minutes
From Waikoloa Beach Resort: approximately 20 minutes
For dinner after your proposal, we recommend making a reservation at one of the resort’s oceanfront restaurants:
Private Dinner on the Beach – For something especially romantic, Four Seasons offers a private dinner under the stars directly on the beach. The experience includes a private oceanfront table for two, a customized four-course menu, champagne on arrival, tropical flowers, tiki torches, and a private server. It’s a beautiful way to continue the celebration immediately after your proposal.

Kona Village, A Rosewood Resort sits along the secluded Kaʻūpūlehu coastline just north of Four Seasons Hualalai. Rather than feeling like a traditional hotel, the expansive property is made up of individual hale-style accommodations spread throughout tropical landscaping, historic fishponds, palms, lava fields, and the shoreline of Kahuwai Bay. The resort was designed to feel deeply connected to the surrounding landscape, which gives proposal photos a relaxed, organic quality while still offering the sophistication of a luxury resort. We especially love this location for couples who want their proposal to feel private and removed from the busier beaches around Kona. Kona Village is approximately 15 minutes from Kona International Airport.

ʻAnaehoʻomalu Beach, often called A-Bay, is one of the most recognizable beaches within Waikoloa Beach Resort. The long crescent-shaped shoreline has a completely different feel from the lava-heavy coastline farther south, with golden sand, rows of palm trees, historic Hawaiian fishponds, and wide-open views toward the sunset. Because the beach stretches across such a large area, there are several different places we can photograph before and after the proposal, from the sandy shoreline to palms, rocky sections, and the fishponds nearby. Its location inside Waikoloa Beach Resort also makes it one of the easiest beaches on this list to incorporate into an evening of dinner, shopping, or drinks without making your partner suspicious.

Anaehoomalu Point is a more rugged and secluded option along the Waikoloa coastline, with lava rock, palms, small pockets of sand, and open sunset views. We specifically recommend this location for couples staying at the Hilton Waikoloa Village, since it’s the best secluded beach option that can be accessed directly from the hotel grounds without needing to drive elsewhere.
For Hilton guests, that makes the proposal feel especially natural. You can leave your room dressed for dinner, take a walk through the resort grounds toward the coastline, and arrive at a quieter beach area without your partner questioning why you’re heading to a completely separate location. The surrounding landscape also gives us a beautiful mix of lava rock, ocean, palms, and sunset light for engagement portraits after the proposal.

From Kailua-Kona: approximately 35–40 minutes
From Waikoloa Beach Resort: located within the resort area
Because we primarily recommend this location for couples staying at Hilton Waikoloa Village, the easiest way to keep the proposal a surprise is to make a dinner reservation somewhere on the property. That gives your partner a natural reason to dress up for the evening, and you can suggest taking a walk along the resort grounds and coastline before dinner while we’re already waiting near the proposal location.
A few of our favorite options include:
After the proposal and a few engagement portraits, you can head straight back into the resort for dinner without needing to drive anywhere else.

Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection sits along the Kohala Coast within the larger Mauna Lani resort community. The property blends manicured luxury with the natural Big Island landscape, including palm-lined grounds, lava rock, ancient fishponds, sandy coves, and views stretching across the Pacific. Compared with the long open shoreline at A-Bay, Mauna Lani feels more intimate, with smaller pockets of coastline that create beautiful opportunities for a proposal that feels tucked away. We especially love the variety here because we can move between lush resort grounds, palms, lava rock, fishponds, and the beach during your engagement portraits without needing to leave the property.

Fairmont Orchid is located along the Kohala Coast within the Mauna Lani resort area and surrounds a beautiful sheltered oceanfront cove. The landscape feels lush and tropical, with mature palm trees, manicured lawns, black lava rock, winding oceanfront pathways, and calm blue water. The protected bay gives this property a softer feel than some of the island’s more rugged coastlines, while the surrounding lava formations still give your photographs that distinctly Big Island look. Fairmont Orchid is especially beautiful for couples who want a romantic resort setting with plenty of greenery while still having direct access to the ocean. Kona International Airport is approximately 22 miles away, with the resort estimating the drive at around 29 minutes.

Mauna Kea Beach Hotel overlooks Kaunaʻoa Bay, one of the most beautiful white-sand beaches on the Kohala Coast. The broad crescent-shaped bay has soft sand, clear turquoise water, mature palm trees, and sweeping ocean views, giving this location a more classic tropical Hawaii look than many of the lava-heavy beaches farther south. The hotel itself has been part of the Big Island landscape for decades, and its understated architecture and established tropical grounds give the property a timeless feeling. We love this location for couples who picture their proposal happening on a traditional white-sand Hawaii beach while still having plenty of variety for portraits around the surrounding resort and coastline. Mauna Kea Resort is approximately 27 miles north of Kona International Airport.

The location sets the scene, but a few thoughtful details can make your proposal feel even more personal. Depending on the beach or resort, we can help you plan simple romantic touches or a more elaborate setup.

Fresh flowers, floral arrangements, and a “Marry Me” display can create a beautiful focal point for the proposal and make the moment feel more intentional. These setups work especially well at resort properties or locations where décor is permitted.

Candles or lanterns can add a soft, romantic atmosphere around sunset. Because many beaches have restrictions on open flames, we recommend using flameless candles or confirming what is allowed at your chosen location before planning the setup.

A luxury picnic is one of our favorite ways to turn the proposal into a full experience. After the big moment, you can sit down together with pillows, florals, champagne, and a beautifully styled setup while you take in the sunset. It gives you time to celebrate, enjoy the moment, and take a few more portraits without feeling rushed.

For something more personal, consider creating a series of handwritten love notes, photos, or small signs leading your partner toward the proposal spot. Each one can highlight a favorite memory, a reason you love them, or a meaningful moment from your relationship before they reach the final surprise.
Small details often make the biggest impact. A meaningful song, framed photos, a favorite bottle of champagne, handwritten vows, or something connected to your relationship can make the proposal feel uniquely yours.
Before planning any décor, we recommend checking the rules for your beach or resort. Some locations have restrictions on signs, candles, flowers, furniture, or commercial setups, so it’s best to confirm what’s allowed before the proposal day.
Once you’ve chosen the right beach, the next step is planning the details that will keep the proposal smooth, private, and a surprise.
